Why I’m breaking up with Facebook

I’m breaking up with Facebook.

I know. I know. People say that all the time and then they come crawling back on hands and knees to their profiles before you’ve even had time to miss them.

But it’s true. We’re doing it.

Mr. Thistle is quitting, too.

And, since you guys show up here so faithfully I figured I owed you an explanation.

It’s time to quiet all the noise.

I’ve got a lot of projects and goals that I’m working on. I want to read at least 10 books before the school year starts back. I’ve got a lot more than that on my reading list no thanks to a little obsession I like to call Thrift Books and McKays. But, I’d like to finish at least 10. And Facebook takes up precious reading time.

I’m also working on another project (I know, it’s annoying when people are so vague) that requires a LOT less chatter in my head from social media and a LOT more focus and dedication on my end. I need to get the creative juices flowing and Facebook is a hindrance to my creative side. I log on and BAM!, next thing you know I’ve wasted a significant amount of time scrolling status updates. I owe it to myself to cut the ties and achieve the real-life things I have planned.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

YEAH it is! Even though I’m not leaving social media completely (you can still follow me on Instagram and Twitter), Facebook is the one that I feel I need to break up with because of this one issue. I feel like Instagram is my artsy social media friend who inspires me and Twitter is my less needy, easier to get along with social media friend. Facebook is just that friend you’re always trying to compete with or measure up to or the busy-body social media friend. I know that sounds silly. Because, come on, social media is all about telling people your business. And I write this blog, for pete’s sake. It’s not like I’m all about the anonymity. But I just don’t look at Facebook the same lately. It steals my joy. It’s like a bad reality show sometimes and I just. can’t. quit. watching. There’s no joy I really get from Facebook anymore.

So, what does this mean for my readers who rely on my Facebook status updates to let them know I’ve posted something new over here? Well, there are a few things you can do to make sure you stay connected. You don’t have to miss a post!

subscribe by email

At the top of this page you’ll find an area to the left, in the sidebar, where you can enter your email address to “subscribe” to this blog. Now, don’t worry. I understand any hesitancy to enter your email in random places like blog sidebars and such. I get so much junk email it isn’t even funny. I’ve started giving people the third degree when they ask for my email. “What do you need it for? How often will you be using it? Is there a way to unsubscribe?” I know how annoying junk email can be. So, you’ll only get one email each time I write a new blog post. You won’t get a reminder a week later or a newsletter (unless you sign up for it separately one day when I have one of those). Subscribing will simply send the post straight to your inbox. No work on your part at all. Well, except for entering your email. And, really, if you can’t manage that, you can always send your email address to me on Facebook, assuming we are already Facebook friends, and I’ll sign you up for the email. I’ll only be on Facebook for the remainder of this week so get them to me if you want me to do it for you.

You can also follow along via Bloglovin’ or NetworkedBlogs. Or, if you’re on Twitter I’ll post links to each post there. Instagram doesn’t allow direct links but if you follow me there you can see photos with the hashtag #blessedlittlethistle letting you know a new post is live.

Hopefully we can stay connected. I don’t want to lose any of my readers. But I think less Facebook noise is going to be just what I need. Hopefully your experience here will improve and you’ll see a marked difference in my creativity, writing, and overall attitude.

Have you ever quit Facebook? Did you return?
